As a composer and performer of a kaleidoscopic mixture of selections for the 6 and 12-string guitar, Richard Gilewitz may be best known for his quirky outlook on life. This solo performer combines quips and tunes with a little history to deliver a timeless picture of American and European fingerstyle guitar. "Fingerstyle Guitar through Time" is truly a magical journey of instrumental music, tales from the road, and a few laughs along the way.
The lecture-style workshops are designed for all levels of players and explore a variety of elements, including Richard's unique right-hand position, which is a compilation of the classical-style guitar teachings, and syncopated/percussive influences. This positioning has enabled Richard to vary his "attack", thus gaining a wide range of options. Richard teaches fingerpicking patterns as a "language", eliminating the speed bumps many players stumble over repeatedly. The fingerpicking patterns are based on classical arpeggios, as well as banjo-style inside rolls, forward rolls, pinch patterns, hammer-ons, and pull-offs. Discussion and demonstration of open tuning, slide, compositional approaches, flexibility exercises, and a variety of tips on increasing playing skills round out the clinics with suggestions on the importance of a healthy attitude and actual ways to help players deal with fears and insecurities about their own playing abilities.
