Mark Jafrate
Mark, a native of Wheeling, West Virginia, began his musical adventures with classical piano
training at age six. He was performing as a church organist and guitarist at age twelve.
In high school he picked up his first banjo at a pawn shop and taught himself to play in
both three finger and clawhammer styles. As a student at West Virginia University Mark
learned bluegrass fiddle and mandolin, performed with several bluegrass groups, and played
acoustic guitar in a variety of bands. Widely traveled around the U.S. and Europe while
employed as an Electrical Engineer, Mark spent three years in Germany and began playing the
Anglo concertina, Irish tin whistle, and bodhran drum.
In addition to teaching banjo, Mark currently performs with “Kindred Spirits”, a local Celtic
band, the “Surf Road Project”, a Bluegrass/Jazz band which performs at many of Florida’s Folk
festivals and he also plays the Great Highland Bagpipes with the “City of Melbourne Pipes and Drums”.
